Perillo was first elected mayor of Tinton Falls in 2017, at the age of 93 and re-elected in 2021. He was the oldest mayor in the country.
"Respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him, Mayor Perillo led with wisdom, kindness, and a deep sense of duty," Charles Terefenko, the borough administrator said.
"His leadership left a lasting impression, and his legacy of service will be remembered for generations to come. To those who knew him personally, he was more than just a leader, he was a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration. His warmth, and love for the borough, will never be forgotten."
Gov. Phil Murphy paid tribute to Perillo on social media.
"Deeply saddened by the passing of our nation’s oldest mayor, Vito Perillo, at the age of 100," Murphy said. "As a World War II veteran and mayor of Tinton Falls, Vito leaves behind an incredible legacy of service. Our hearts go out to his loved ones and the entire Tinton Falls community."
